After budget, the timeline for an interior design project is one of the biggest questions I hear – and I totally get it. Whether it’s a single-room makeover or a full home transformation, you want to know when you’ll finally get to enjoy it! And while today’s design timelines look a bit different than they used to (hello, supply chain delays), there’s still good news ahead. Let’s walk through what’s realistic in 2026, what to expect along the way, and how to set yourself up for success.
Construction & Lead Times: The Reality Check
Even before 2020, interior design projects took time – but post-pandemic, that time has stretched a bit longer. Builders who once estimated 16 months to complete an 8,000–10,000 sq. ft. home now see timelines closer to 18–20 months. Why? It’s not just materials – it’s everything from fabrication backlogs to freight slowdowns. Something as simple as a delayed steel beam or missing fabric bolt can pause an entire construction schedule. When one detail is off, it can affect the whole sequence. That’s why patience (and a great plan) is your best design tool right now.
Patience, My Friend – It’s a Design Virtue
We often joke that every designer and client should sip a “patience martini” – shaken, not stirred. 🍸 Even smaller projects are feeling the ripple effects. A chaise that once took 3–4 months to arrive might now take 6–8 months. One vendor even emailed mid-project saying they couldn’t fulfill an order because of a foam shortage. (You can’t make this stuff up!) So if your new dining chairs or sectional are taking longer than planned, you’re not alone. It’s the new normal in home design – and it’s happening everywhere.
Here’s the Good News
While design projects may take longer, they’re also more intentional than ever. This is your chance to slow down, collaborate deeply with your designer, and make sure every choice supports your vision. At The Interior Design Advocate®, we tell clients to expect about five to six months for a single-room project and 18–20 months for full-home projects. That includes design, sourcing, and fabrication for made-to-order furniture. Smaller, multi-room projects tend to move faster simply because there’s less to design. But no matter the scope, one thing is constant – the more decisively you make your selections, the faster your project moves forward.
What Really Happens Before Anything Is Ordered
Behind every beautiful room is months of thoughtful work – long before the first sofa ever ships. Here’s what’s happening during that “quiet” time:
– Discovery and vision-setting (this is where we learn your style and lifestyle goals)
– Space planning and layout
– Budget forecasting
– Sourcing and design presentations
– Vendor coordination and material selections
Each step requires expertise and careful timing, especially when we’re specifying furniture and materials made to order. Even small private workrooms – the ones handcrafting upholstery or case goods – are operating at full tilt. The demand for home updates hasn’t slowed down since 2020.
Bottom Line: Beautiful Things Take Time
The best projects are worth the wait. Whether it’s a fully furnished dream home or your first designer-guided makeover, you’ll love the results when every piece is perfectly placed and thoughtfully crafted. So, as I like to remind my design clients (and friends), beautiful things come to those who wait – and plan wisely.
